Overwintering Energetics in Bark Beetles
Summary: This study reveals that winter timing—not just cold tolerance—determines bark beetle survival. Early, severe winters constrain energy accumulation, reducing survival and outbreak potential, while warm autumns enhance energy reserves. We also found evidence that bark beetles can feed opportunistically during mid-winter warm periods, with important implications for pest management under climate change.
Multiple Stressors in Marine Bivalves
Summary: When soft-shell clams face combined salinity stress and mechanical disturbance, they prioritize energetically costly burrowing behavior over maintaining osmotic balance. This study demonstrates that mitochondrial aerobic capacity limits behavioral performance under multiple stressors.
Mitochondrial Mechanisms of Environmental Tolerance
Summary: This comprehensive review synthesizes current knowledge of how mitochondria enable organisms to survive oxygen limitation across diverse animal taxa. We identify conserved mechanisms including modulation of electron transport capacity, suppression of reactive oxygen species, and investment in mitochondrial quality control.
